Meet the professional
Having left Exmouth Community College in 1989 and having never played golf before Darren took a position at Exmouth Indoor Golf Centre with a view to obtaining retailing skills.
However, like most of us Darren very quickly became hooked on the game of golf and was a trainee Professional at Holsworthy Golf Club and East Devon Golf Club before becoming a fully qualified PGA Golf Professional whilst at Thornbury Golf Centre in Bristol.
Darren moved to Portmore Golf Park in 1999 and since taking up his role has helped to produce a thriving and successful junior section through his well renowned Junior Development Programme.
Darren has also coached the ever improving ladies section to success in the Ladies Devon League in 2005 and 2007 and the Ladies Friendly league in the same years.
He also coached the mens section to North Devon Rosebowl success in 2007, the first major title the men's section have won in their history.
Darren offers coaching on either an individual basis or through the hugely popular golf academy which is available to golfers of all ages and abilities.
Darren has a GASP teaching system which is a fantastic way of allowing pupils to see their own progress visually.
Darren says, "I love my role here at Portmore as it gives me an opportunity to meet and work with so many different people. I get huge satisfaction from my coaching whether it's teaching an absolute beginner or helping the clubs teams to success. I'm very proud of the success we have had within the club and in particular our junior section where a lot of people have put in an awful lot of hard work to produce a very successful structure. I'm also lucky to work alongside some great members of staff who certainly help to make my job easier"
