The junior cup was played for last weekend and was won by Richard Clarke in a nail biting finish.

In a new format the cup was played for over 36 holes with the 1st round played on Saturday and then the 2nd round on Sunday with the juniors going out in leader board order to give the feel of a proper tour event.

After the 1st round it was George Williams who led the way with a brilliant 43 points and held a 4 point lead over Ray Clarke on 39 points with Richard Clarke sitting in 3rd with 38 points. Mitch Wood led the way in the scratch prize after a 1st round 73.

There was a real buzz before the 2nd round with the field being put in leader board order it was all to play for. The standard of golf was excellent and for some this was their 1st experience at playing 18 holes 2 days running, in fact for a couple of juniors it was the first time ever they had played a full round individually. The leaders from round 1 were nip and tuck all the way through the 2nd round and so much so that there were 2 tied for 1st place at the end of 36 holes. 1st round leader George Williams shot 33 points for an overall total of 76 points and this was matched by playing partner Richard Clarke who shot 38 points to match his 1st round score and to also record 76 points. However it was Richard that was victorious as he had the best last round and therefore won the cup on count back.

Consolation for George was a handicap reduction and the knowledge that he played so well in his first major competition. Mitch wood finished in 3rd place with 72 points and he also won the scratch prize with rounds of 73 and 75.

There was also a 9 hole competition for the non handicap juniors on the Landkey course and this was well attended and once again the standard of golf was excellent. The winner was Ed Mann with Liam Jenkins and Fergus O’Donnell finishing runners up. Again for some juniors this was their first taste of golf out on the course and they should all be proud of their performance.

Congratulations to all the prize winners and well done to all those who took part over the 2 days. The new format certainly seemed to work and I’m sure next year will be a similar success.
