So Close For Portmores Palariet Team

The Portmore Palariet team almost pulled off the biggest win in the clubs history in the Finals Day of the Devon County Palariet Memorial Trophy.

The Finals Day was held at the fabulous East Devon Golf Club. Having successfully beaten established sides such as Stover and Teignmouth in previous rounds the team was drawn against Dartmouth in the morning semi final. After perfect preparation leading up to the day Captain Steve West had the team fired up to go out and make history.

This was evident right from the outset and after the front nines play Portmore were up in four of the five matches a position that they never let slip and after winning the first two matches early the remaining groups did what they needed to do in order to record a convincing 4-1 victory and seal a deserved place in the final.

In the final they came up against Fingle Glen who had won the trophy two years ago. This was always going to be a tough and tight match and so it proved. Through the front nine things started to swing in Fingles favour and it looked bleak for the Portmore team but the team were not about to roll over and concede and in typical gutsy fashion proceeded to stage a back nine comeback to once again put the outcome in the balance. However it was not meant to be as Fingle eventually ran out 4-1 winners although 3 of the matches went down the last hole and 1 finished on the 17th to prove it was a much closer contest than the score line suggests.

Although it was disappointing to lose in the final the overwhelming feeling was one of pride and achievement in reaching the final and a feeling of more to come in future years. Captain Steve West was a proud man and thanked his team for their efforts as well as the caddies who did an excellent job, many of whom were juniors and no doubt future team members. A big thanks was also given to all the supporters who gave their support to the team and proved once again the tremendous spirit that exists within the club.
