Ladies Gain Sweet Revenge

Portmore Ladies have become Devon League winners for the 3rd time by winning a dramatic and tense finals day at Okehampton Golf Club. This is the 5th year in a row that the Ladies have qualified through to finals day and having lost in the final on the last hole last year the team were determined to regain the trophy.

Local rivals Saunton were the semi final opponents and the ladies got off to a positive start with Leah Webber leading from the front. At one point the team were ahead in 6 of the 7 matches and never looked as though they would let that slip. So it proved as they won the first 4 matches to take an unassailable lead with Hills Goldsmith and Karen Thomas recording emphatic wins.

In the other semi final Fingle Glen came through against Bigbury to set up a repeat of last years final giving the ladies a perfect opportunity to gain revenge for last years final defeat to Fingle. This was always going to be a really tight match and so it proved. The first 4 matches were shared and at that point it looked like Fingle had the edge in the remaining games but as often happens there was to be a turn in fortunes. After fingle had levelled the scores at 3-3 it all came down to the very last match on the course which fittingly involved Portmores lady captain Marise Mackie.

Marise rolled in a four foot putt on the 15th to go 2up with three holes to play. Both players played the 16th hole very solidly but it was Fingle who won the hole courtesy of a 2 foot putt. Both ladies hit good tee shots down the 17th and both were in decent positions after their 2nd shots. Playing her 3rd shot first Fingle hit a fantastic pitch which lipped out and rolled out to four feet. In response Marise hit an excellent pitch on to the green and after a solid 2 putt left the Fingle lady with a putt for the hole. To the relief of the Portmore support the putt slipped by leaving Marise 1up on the 18th tee.

Both players worked their way up the 18th and left each other with an identical chip from just off the green. Playing first Fingle chipped superbly to 3 feet to put the pressure firmly back on to Marise. Showing huge composure Marise hit a brilliant chip to a foot and tapped in to win the trophy for Portmore. Huge celebrations were followed on the 18th green and all who witnessed agreed that the play of the 2 ladies in front of 60 people and under intense pressure was to be congratulated. The ladies team received the trophy and thanked their opponents as well as Okehampton Golf Club for hosting the finals and also their caddies and supporters.
