The Rain in Spain
Item 45
The Rain In Spain As we battle with the current poor weather it seem we are all guilty of coming in from their round of golf only to complain about how wet the golf course is. It makes it seem like we are the only club with this problem, believe me nothing could be further from the truth. The thing we have to remember is that not even the green staff can control the weather and yet we still expect a golf course in pristine condition all year round.I have just returned from Spain on our annual golfing trip and we honestly experienced some of the wettest playing conditions we have played in, including at home. The question is why? Was it that the golf clubs and green staff just sat back and did nothing? Absolutely not, the green staff had done all that was possible to make the courses playable for us but they were powerless against the amount of rain that had fallen at that start of the year, just like ourselves back here. Balls were plugging in the fairway as well as the rough, bunkers were full of water, paths and walk ways were like streams and some greens were under water.Marbella Golf and Country club is one of the richest clubs in Spain with a serious pot of money at their disposal and yet for all the thousands upon thousands of pounds they have and are spending on drainage they still have a golf course far wetter than our own and that is purely down to the adverse weather they have had to contend with.No amount of money or man power can compensate for the appalling weather conditions.I for one now have a renewed sympathy and respect for all golf clubs and green staff who have to put up with a lot of unfair criticism over the condition of the course when it is completely out of their control.Maybe in the summer when the course is playing great we should all take the time to stop the green staff and say thanks for their hard work instead of being quick to criticise unfairly in the winter.
